Connecting devices to Campus Wifi

Connecting iPhone devices

  • Connect to the Vikingnet Network:

    1. Open Settings on your iPhone.

    2. Navigate to Wi-Fi.

    3. Find the "Vikingnet" network in the list and tap on it. 

    4. You should be prompted with a log-in page or pop-up.

    5. When prompted with the certificate, there should be an option to trust it. Tap on "Trust" or a similar prompt. This action is essentially bypassing the certificate validation.

    6. In the Username field, input your username provided by the network administrator.

    7. Input the network password in the Password field.

    8. If asked for Domain, use "sjrstate.edu"

    9. Tap Join or Connect.

  • Troubleshooting:

    • If you're unable to connect, double-check that you've entered all details correctly, especially your username and password.
    • If you've connected previously and not accepted the certificate, you'll need to forget the network, and try reconnecting, this time Trusting the certificate

Connecting Android Devices

Note: Not all Android devices are made by the same manufacturer, so the interface may vary. Some options may not be asked for on some devices.

  • Connect to the Vikingnet Network:
    Troubleshooting:
    1. Open Settings on your Android device.

    2. Navigate to Wi-Fi or Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.

    3. Find the "Vikingnet" network and tap on it

    • Find the following or closest settings and enter them on the next screen:

      • Security: EAP or PEAP

      • EAP methodPEAP  (might be combined with Security as EAP+PEAP or EAP/PEAP)

      • Phase 2 authentication, select MSCHAPv2. (if not present or automatically detected, use "Automatic")

      • Server CA certificate, choose Do not check.

      • Identity: input your username.

      • Leave the Anonymous identity field blank unless otherwise specified.

      • Others: Other options may be presented, such as "Subject Name". Unless directed by I.T., leave optional and unmentioned boxes empty or selected to "none"

    • Tap Connect

  • Troubleshooting
    • Ensure your device is up to date, and the date/time are correct. Incorrect time can prevent connection to secure networks
    • If you're unable to connect, ensure that you've entered all details correctly, especially your username and password.

Connecting Chromebook Devices

  • Connect to the WPA2 Enterprise Network:
    • Click on the network icon (usually located in the bottom right corner of the screen) to display available networks.

    • Find the "Vikingnet" network in the list and click on it.

    • Enter these settings into the relevant fields/selections:

      • Security: EAP or PEAP

      • EAP methodPEAP  (might be combined with Security as EAP+PEAP or EAP/PEAP)

      • Phase 2 authentication, select MSCHAPv2. (if not present or automatically detected, use "Automatic")

      • Server CA certificate, choose Do not check.

      • Identity: input your username. 

      • Leave the Anonymous identity field blank unless otherwise specified.

      • Others: Other options may be presented, such as "Subject Name". Unless directed by I.T., leave optional and unmentioned boxes empty or selected to "none"

    • Input the network password in the Password field.

    • If asked for Domain, use "sjrstate.edu"

    • Click Connect.

  • Troubleshooting

    • If you're unable to connect, ensure that you've entered all details correctly, especially your username and password.
    • Some models of Chromebook/ChromeOS require a restart after failed connections

Connecting Macbook Devices

 

  • Connect to the WPA2 Enterprise Network:

    1. Click on the Wi-Fi icon (located in the top-right corner of the screen) to display available networks.

    2. Select Open Network Preferences or Join Other Network if the desired network isn't immediately visible.

    3. Select "Vikingnet" and join.

    4. In the Username field, enter your username.

    5. Enter the network password in the Password field.

    6. When you attempt to connect, a window might appear showing the certificate that's not trusted. There should be an option to Continue or Trust. Click on that.

    7. Click Apply or OK to save the changes and connect

  • Troubleshooting:

    • If you're unable to connect, re-check the details you've entered, especially the username and password.
    • If the network is unavailable or does not connect, you can try manually adding the network:
      • Find and select the desired network or click on the "+" button to add a new connection.
      • For the Network Name, type in the SSID of the desired network if it's not in the dropdown.
      • Set the Security dropdown to WPA2 Enterprise.
      • Ensure PEAP is selected under EAP.
      • For the Inner authentication, select MSCHAPv2.
