Microsoft Authenticator is the multi-factor authenticator (MFA) service that will be used by students when accessing SJR State resources and applications when sign on it required. Below are some frequently asked questions.
Why is SJR State using Microsoft Authenticator?
It has become increasingly easier for malicious actors to compromise the security of a single password. They can often be guessed, stolen, or hacked. Even users that have followed strong password recommendations can be compromised. Multi-Factor authentication adds another layer of security, even when your password is unknowingly compromised. Multi-Factor Authentication enhances the security of your account by using a device to verify your identity. This prevents anyone but you from accessing your account, even if they know your password. Microsoft, along with other account identity providers, have made it a standard practice to require (not optional) the use of multi-factor authentication.
When will I have to use Microsoft Authenticator?
Once your SJR State assigned account is created, it is Microsoft Authenticator protected. When you go to sign into your assigned account for the first time, you will be prompted to complete Microsoft enrollment. See the Tutorial Video section below to see an example of the process.
How do I manage my Authenticator devices?
After your initial setup, you can go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com then click on Security Info to add, edit, or remove devices with your Microsoft account.
What if I can’t use the Microsoft Authenticator App?
Microsoft Authenticator requires a capable MFA device to complete the process. The mobile app is free and the easiest method to access your account. Other options include a Hardware Token or a physical security key.
Hardware Token: These are key-fob like devices that produce a multi-digit code. These can only be obtained through the SJR State IT Helpdesk. You will need to call for assistance. Security Keys: These are external USB keys that you plug into your device that you are using to access your SJR State account. One of the most popular security keys are made by Yubico and can be purchased by many resellers. Glossary and Terminology
- 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication)
- An additional layer of authentication beyond a username and password. 2FA involves something you know (password) plus something you have with you (like a smartphone with an app) to prevent someone from logging in with only your password. You still enter your username and password. The second factor provided by Microsoft Authenticator is simply an added layer of security on top of your existing credentials. We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone to perform 2FA.
- Passcode
- These are numeric codes that can be generated either via the app or a hardware token. Passcodes may be used at any time and are particularly handy for authenticating when your 2FA device doesn't have internet or cellular service.
- Push Notification
- A push authentication request that is sent to the mobile app on an enrolled device. Push notifications include information like the geographical location of the access device, IP address of the access device, and the application being accessed so you can verify whether the push is real or fraudulent.
How to Setup Microsoft Authenticator
Sign into your SJR State account for the first time. Put in your college email address and click Next.
Enter your college account password and click Next
One the "Let's keep your account secure" prompt, click Next
Now it tells you to Install Microsoft Authenticator. If you haven't already, install the app on your smartphone and then click Next on this prompt
Open the app on your smartphone and choose to add your account via a QR code. On your pc prompt, click next to display the QR code.
Use the app to scan the QR code displayed on the screen. On the screen, then click Next.
Now that you have scanned the QR code and the account is linked to the app on your smartphone, the following prompts on your screen will complete the sign-in process. This will include your pc displaying a code that you will be prompted to enter on your phone. This verifies the sign-in process.
